My thoughts on Delicious and Diigo

I have just began using delicious (username is jsoule05 if you want to check it out). So far, it has been great. This is the ultimate PLN tool and quite frankly what I have been looking for for organizing all of my resources and links. I love the tagging feature and the ability to put links into many different categories. It is also great that I can steal from other users. That was a huge emphasis in my undergrad; "steal as many ideas and resources as you can". Delicious in some ways allows me to sit back and let others do the research while I just pick in choose what I like and dislike.

With all of that nice stuff being said, I still wish there was a little more freedom in customization of the page with Delicious. I cannot quite put my finger on it, but it can be overwhelming with all of the new information and tools that I have access to. I am still trying to figure out the best way to maximize the use of this new tool.

I do not have as much experience with Diigo, but it seems like there may be a little more freedom in organization. Especially with tools such as the highlighting feature. My problem is, I have already gotten started with Delicious. I can become overwhelmed if I try to create to many new tools. So, my thought for now is that I will stick with Delicious. any pointer about how to organize my network as far as subscribing to specific tags would be greatly appreciated.

  1. I ran into the factor of being overwhelmed as well. Eventually I had to turn my computer off for the night. I actually wanted to message a person in Delicious and I could find my empty inbox, but no way to send a message out. I too was so immersed in the Delicious page that when I went to look at Diigo I didn't want to give it a chance because I didn't want to again spend hours on this page as well. I do think that for the first time tagging really made sense to me in Delicious did you feel the same way?

  2. Yes the tagging is great. Using multiple tags is useful in keep things organized in a variety of different ways. The tagging also works great when looking at other people's Delicious pages to find specific information.

  3. I agree with you- delicious is a wonderful tool, but we are learning so many wonderful tools in such a short amount of time, that I sometimes feel too overloaded with them. While they are all interesting to learn, delicious seems like a tool that is actually worth investing the time in, as it will be quite helpful in organizing/tagging different sites and then categorizing them for class, a specific project, etc. And I TOTALLY agree with "stealing" from others- isn't that what teaching is all about? ;-p

  4. I actually wish this course extended over the entire 16 weeks, but it wasn't scheduled that way. You'd have more time to reflect and pick out what works best for you.

I, too, started with delicious and find it hard to make the switch, but there is something in Diigo where you can import delicious bookmarks if you want, so you don't have to start all over.

In terms of organizing things, I've tried Tag Bundles to group together tags on similar topics (a little like putting things in a folder and then being able to search by a tag just within that folder). I find myself giving sites more and more tags as I go along as well as doing a 1-2 line description of the site so I remember why I bookmarked it in the first place.
